Interview date: 19 October 2017

The School of Media and Performing Arts at the University of Portsmouth, is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Musical Theatre to join our team at an exciting stage in our development.

We are seeking an experienced practitioner / academic with a broad range of practical expertise and knowledge in areas of musical theatre in global contexts, new musical theatre writing, and ‘acting the song’. An established scholar and practitioner, with international connections to industry and the academy, the successful applicant will contribute to the delivery of our core teaching across the undergraduate programmes, along with relevant departmental activities such as recruitment and course development. The successful applicant will also play a key role in establishing and consolidating the expansion of our current portfolio and future development.

Our undergraduate course in Musical Theatre is among the most established in the UK, and the School is home to the internationally-leading journal Studies in Musical Theatre (Intellect). The successful applicant will join a small but internationally-recognised team of musical theatre scholars and practitioners, whose research-informed teaching draws on expertise in historiography and archival research, new musical theatre, and musical theatre in a global/international context. With significant specialist research expertise within the team, working toward REF2021 is a priority, and we are looking to develop postgraduate taught provision and research. Located in purpose-built premises adjoining the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth, our developing partnership with the theatre as well as other UK and International partners is a significant priority and opportunity for our ambitions. The School of Media and Performing Arts is one of four schools in the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Portsmouth, and offers taught undergraduate, postgraduate and postgraduate research programmes in Creative Writing, Film and Media Studies and Industries, alongside the Performing Arts. In joining our small team of established scholars and practitioners, it is anticipated that the post holder will be excited to exploit and explore the opportunities of working within a multidisciplinary creative environment and will be keen to use this to enhance and augment teaching, research and practice in the school and beyond.

In joining the University of Portsmouth, you will be joining one of only four Universities in the south east of England to be rated Gold in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (2017). The University is home to 23,000 students, including 4,000 international and EU students from 130 countries, along with 2,500 full-time staff. As an institution, Portsmouth is ranked 37th in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2018), and our performing arts provision is ascending the league tables, with courses currently ranked 47th in the country (Guardian 2018).
