Revised plans for a Morrisons supermarket have been submitted on the site of the empty East Street Shopping Centre, Southampton.
Southampton City Council bosses gave the £30m development the green light in November, but Morrisons have submitted revised plans with a new road layout at the site.
Instead of narrowing Evans Street to two lanes, as had been planned previously, now the plan is to keep Evans Street as it is with four lanes. The change follows concerns being raised that the two lane layout could affect traffic heading to and from the city’s ferry terminals.
The development will replace the old 1970s shopping centre with a 60,000 square foot Morrisons store which will provide 400 jobs.
Parking for over 250 cars will be built above the store, while travelators similar to those at Ikea will take customers and trolleys to and from the supermarket.
Southampton City Council’s planning and rights of way committee will decide on the new plans on April 23.
If the new proposals get the go-ahead work is expected to start later this year, and the store is expected to open around the end of next year.
